The competitive advantage of
inner-cities—
a theory proven
A decade after his breakthrough idea, Michael Porter says his 4-part premise on the enduring strength of urban economies has been confirmed:
1. Location advantage: cities are, by definition, at the center of transport nodes—yet with surprisingly well-priced real estate.
2. Density:  cities remain densely populated relative to suburbs, with largely untapped purchasing power.
3. Labor pool:  cities have deep pools of talent that growing companies require, in every field and at every level of skill.
4. Economic clustering: center-cities are still the focus of commerce, construction, health care, tourism, education, and culture.
“Companies that thrive in cities have many traits in common: they are innovative; they have discovered market niches where they have advantages; and they are progressive in workforce recruitment and retention practices.”
--Michael Porter, Harvard Business School, founder of the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City.

Is housing on the rebound?
§        Cleveland ranks 3rd of 20 major markets in new home sales figures.   This was featured in CoolCleveland.  See:  http://www.clevelandcityliving.blogspot.com/
§        U.S. homes are attracting foreigners: “For many foreign buyers, property in the U.S. is cheap. Many have unbridled confidence in our market and view this as the bargain of a lifetime.”
--The Wall Street Journal, 27 May 2008
