Steam dummy trolley
A postcard view looking east up Broadway towards the Harvard intersection. Goodman's Furniture and the Newburgh Opera House are adjacent on the right. Visible in the center street is the dummy trolley.
In the 1870's, a steam dummy trolley line ran up the middle of Broadway from Cleveland to Newburgh.
The Cleveland & Newburgh steam dummy trolley connected Cleveland and Newburgh. The steam engine was at the front over the driving wheels. They were called dummies because they were disguised to look like the horse-drawn trolleys still in use. The company did not wish to frighten the horses of competing lines.
